Summary
CVE-2026-18886 is an improper access control vulnerability in the ServiceNow AI Platform’s system configuration image upload processor. It allows an unauthenticated user to create or modify instance data beyond what was intended, resulting in privilege escalation. The flaw carries the maximum severity rating and was disclosed by ServiceNow on August 27, 2026 alongside other critical AI Platform issues; ServiceNow states it is not aware of active exploitation.
Technical details
- Root cause: Improper access control in the system configuration image upload processor of the ServiceNow AI Platform, which fails to properly restrict who can create or modify instance configuration data.
- Trigger conditions: Exploitable "in certain circumstances" by a fully unauthenticated user sending requests to the image upload processor of an exposed instance; no user interaction is required.
- Attack vector: Network — the affected functionality is reachable remotely without credentials.
- Impact: Unauthorized creation or modification of instance data beyond intended scope, leading to privilege escalation on the affected ServiceNow instance.
Affected software
- ServiceNow AI Platform, Xanadu family: versions before Patch 11 Hot Fix 7a
- Yokohama family: versions before Patch 12 Hot Fix 3b and before Patch 13 Hot Fix 4
- Zurich family: versions before Patch 7b Hot Fix 3, Patch 8 Hot Fix 5, Patch 9 Hot Fix 6, Patch 10 Hot Fix 2m, Patch 10 Hot Fix 3, Patch 11, or Patch 12
- Australia family: versions before Patch 2 Hot Fix 3, Patch 3 Hot Fix 2, Patch 3m, Patch 4, or Patch 5

Mitigation and recommended actions
- Immediate: Apply the ServiceNow-provided security update for your release family (Xanadu, Yokohama, Zurich, or Australia) to reach the patch/hot fix levels listed above or later. ServiceNow-hosted instances have already received the fix; self-hosted and partner-hosted customers must apply it manually.
- If patching is delayed: Restrict and monitor network access to the instance’s system configuration and image upload functionality, and review instance logs for unexpected configuration data changes until the patch is applied.
