Summary

CVE-2026-48252 is a Missing Authentication for Critical Function vulnerability (CWE-306) in Adobe Experience Manager (AEM) affecting AEM as a Cloud Service, AEM 6.5 LTS, and AEM 6.5. Rated High severity with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.6, the flaw allows unauthenticated remote attackers to bypass security controls and gain unauthorized write access to the system, with scope changed beyond the vulnerable component.

Technical details

  • Root cause: A critical server-side function lacks proper authentication enforcement (CWE-306 – Missing Authentication for Critical Function), allowing requests to reach privileged functionality without any credential check.
  • Trigger conditions: No authentication, no user interaction, and low attack complexity are required — any unauthenticated attacker reachable over the network can attempt exploitation.
  • Attack vector: Network-based (AV:N); AEM instances are internet-exposed by design, serving public-facing web content for enterprises, making them directly reachable.
  • Impact: Successful exploitation results in unauthorized write access with changed scope (S:C, I:H). In the context of AEM — which manages enterprise web content, digital assets, and publishing workflows — this could enable content defacement, injection of malicious content, data manipulation, or serve as a foothold for further compromise. Confidentiality and availability are not directly impacted by this vector.

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • AEM as a Cloud Service: Update to Release 2026.6.0 — Adobe deploys this automatically to Cloud Service customers; verify your environment has received the update.
  • AEM 6.5 LTS: Apply Service Pack 2 (includes hotfix NPR-43972).
  • AEM 6.5: Apply Service Pack 25 (includes hotfix NPR-43971).
  • If immediate patching is not possible, restrict network-level access to AEM authoring and administrative endpoints using web application firewall (WAF) rules or perimeter controls to limit exposure to trusted networks only.
  • Adobe has reported no known exploits in the wild at time of publication; however, given the unauthenticated nature of the vulnerability and AEM’s broad internet exposure, prompt patching is strongly recommended.
