CVE-2026-84108 – Cross-Site Scripting (Remote Code Execution in Browser Context) – IBM Guardium Data

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-84108 is a cross-site scripting (XSS) vulnerability affecting IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.2, caused by improper neutralization of input during web page generation (CWE-79). A remote, unauthenticated attacker can exploit the flaw to inject and execute arbitrary script/HTML in the context of a victim’s browser session against the Guardium web management interface. The issue carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.1 (High).

Technical details

  • Root cause: The Guardium Data Protection web interface fails to properly sanitize/encode certain input before it is rendered back into web pages, allowing injected script content to be reflected or stored and later executed.
  • Trigger conditions: An attacker delivers crafted input (e.g., via a malicious link, form submission, or manipulated request parameter) that is processed and rendered by the affected web UI component without proper output encoding.
  • Attack vector: Network — the vulnerability is remotely exploitable over HTTP(S) and does not require any privileges (PR:N) or user interaction beyond the victim loading/interacting with the crafted content (UI:N per the vector string), though attack complexity is rated High (AC:H).
  • Impact: Successful exploitation can lead to execution of attacker-controlled script in the browser session of a user interacting with the Guardium web console, with high impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability (C:H/I:H/A:H) — potentially enabling session hijacking, credential theft, or manipulation of the compromised session’s actions within the data protection console.

Affected software

  • IBM Guardium Data Protection 12.2 (12.2.0)

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 8.1 (High)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: IBM has published a fix for this issue as part of a broader Guardium Data Protection 12.2 security bulletin (covering CVE-2026-84108 along with numerous other vulnerabilities). Apply the SqlGuard_12.0p233_FixPack for Guardium Data Protection 12.2, available via IBM Support Fix Central, as soon as possible.
  • If immediate patching is not possible: No official workaround has been published by IBM for this specific vulnerability. Restrict network access to the Guardium web management interface to trusted administrative networks/VPNs, enforce strict browser security controls (e.g., disabling unnecessary script execution paths, using modern browsers with XSS protections), and monitor web console access logs for anomalous requests until the fix pack can be applied.
  • Review the full IBM security bulletin for this release, as it addresses multiple additional vulnerabilities in the same Guardium Data Protection 12.2 codebase that should be remediated together.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
