Summary

CVE-2026-82925 is a deserialization vulnerability (PHP Object Injection) in the Site Reviews WordPress plugin affecting versions 7.2.2 through 8.2.2. The plugin fails to properly secure deserialization of request data, allowing unauthenticated attackers to inject arbitrary PHP objects on affected installations. The flaw has a CVSS v3.1 base score of 8.1 (High).

Technical details

  • Root cause: The plugin deserializes attacker-supplied request data and protects that operation with a key derived by padding the site’s WordPress nonce key (a value normally used for CSRF-style protection, not as a cryptographic secret).
  • Trigger conditions: The protective key becomes publicly computable on installations where the underlying nonce key is absent, left at its sample/default value, or too short to provide real secrecy — conditions that occur on a meaningful subset of real-world WordPress installs.
  • Attack vector: Network-based; no authentication and no user interaction are required (PR:N, UI:N), though attack complexity is rated High (AC:H) since the attacker must first derive or reconstruct the weak key.
  • Impact: Successful exploitation lets an unauthenticated attacker inject arbitrary PHP objects into the application. The Site Reviews plugin code itself contains no further "gadget chain" to automatically escalate this into code execution, but if other themes or plugins on the same WordPress installation expose exploitable magic methods (__wakeup, __destruct, etc.), the injected object can be leveraged to achieve remote code execution, unauthorized administrative access, data exfiltration, or site defacement. This risk is reflected in the High confidentiality, integrity, and availability impact ratings.

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Update the Site Reviews plugin to version 8.3.0 or later, which addresses the insecure key derivation and deserialization handling.
  • If immediate patching is not possible:
    • Verify that wp-config.php defines strong, randomly generated authentication keys and salts (e.g., AUTH_KEY, NONCE_KEY, and related secrets) with sufficient length and entropy — do not leave these at default/sample values, as this directly enables the key-derivation weakness exploited by this vulnerability.
    • Audit other installed plugins and themes for known PHP Object Injection "gadget chains" that could be triggered by an injected object, since impact from this flaw is amplified by co-installed vulnerable code.
    • Consider temporarily deactivating the Site Reviews plugin on internet-facing sites until it can be updated, particularly if the site’s WordPress security keys have not been rotated recently.
