CVE-2024-58387 – Unauthenticated Arbitrary File Read (Path Traversal) – Inspur Haiyue HCM Cloud (all

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2024-58387 is a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in Inspur Haiyue HCM Cloud, a cloud-based human capital management platform marketed for large enterprises. The flaw resides in the /api/model_report/file/download endpoint, which fails to validate user-supplied path parameters, allowing unauthenticated remote attackers to read arbitrary files from the underlying server. The vulnerability carries a High severity rating and has been associated with active exploitation attempts observed in the wild.

Technical details

  • Root cause: the /api/model_report/file/download endpoint accepts index and ext request parameters that are used to construct a file path without sanitization or restriction to an intended directory.
  • Trigger condition: an attacker sends a crafted HTTP request to the endpoint, manipulating the index and ext parameters to traverse outside the intended file storage directory (e.g., using ../-style sequences).
  • Attack vector: network-based, requires no authentication and no user interaction, making it low-complexity to exploit.
  • Impact: arbitrary file disclosure, including operating system files such as /etc/passwd, application database files, and system/application configuration files — potentially exposing credentials, employee personal data, and other sensitive HR platform contents.
  • Exploitation activity targeting this endpoint was first observed and documented by the Shadowserver Foundation on November 4, 2024.

Affected software

  • Inspur Haiyue HCM Cloud — all versions (no version range restriction specified by the vendor/CVE record).

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 7.5 (High)
  • CVSS v3.1 Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
  • A CVSS v4.0 score of 8.7 (High) has also been assigned to this vulnerability (vector: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N).

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Apply the vendor-supplied patch or updated build of Inspur Haiyue HCM Cloud that remediates path traversal on the /api/model_report/file/download endpoint. Organizations should contact Inspur directly to confirm the patched release applicable to their deployment, as no specific fixed version number is published in the CVE record.
  • If no patch is available: Restrict network exposure of the HCM Cloud application to the internet, placing it behind a VPN or access-controlled network segment; deploy a web application firewall (WAF) rule to block path traversal sequences and suspicious requests to the /api/model_report/file/download endpoint; monitor logs for requests containing traversal patterns (e.g., ../) or anomalous index/ext parameter values; and restrict the web server/application process’s file-system permissions to limit the blast radius of any successful file read.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
