CVE-2014-125130 – Unauthenticated Arbitrary File Read – CodeArt Google MP3 Audio Player WordPress Pl

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2014-125130 is a path traversal vulnerability (CWE-22) in the CodeArt Google MP3 Audio Player WordPress plugin, developed by Damjan, affecting versions 1.0.11 and earlier. The flaw allows unauthenticated remote attackers to read arbitrary files from the server’s filesystem via the plugin’s direct_download.php script, including wp-config.php, which exposes WordPress database credentials. The vulnerability has been observed being exploited in the wild, with exploitation activity first reported by the Shadowserver Foundation on October 19, 2023.

Technical details

  • Root cause: direct_download.php accepts a file parameter and passes it to a file-read operation without sanitizing path-traversal sequences or validating the requesting user’s authentication/authorization.
  • Trigger conditions: The script is reachable without authentication on any WordPress site running the vulnerable plugin, as long as the plugin’s files are present under /wp-content/plugins/google-mp3-audio-player/.
  • Attack vector: A remote, unauthenticated attacker sends an HTTP GET request to direct_download.php with a crafted file parameter containing directory-traversal sequences (e.g., ../../../wp-config.php) to break out of the intended download directory.
  • Impact: Disclosure of arbitrary files readable by the web server process, including wp-config.php (database credentials) and other sensitive configuration or system files (e.g., /etc/passwd), which can lead to full site or server compromise.

Affected software

  • CodeArt Google MP3 Audio Player WordPress plugin (slug: google-mp3-audio-player), versions 0 through 1.0.11 (inclusive)
  • The plugin is no longer available/supported in the official WordPress plugin repository.

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 7.5 (High) — CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
  • An alternate CVSS v4.0 score of 8.7 (High) has also been published for this CVE: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: No vendor-supplied patched version is confirmed available; the plugin has been removed/closed in the WordPress Plugin Directory and no longer receives updates from the maintainer. The recommended action is to remove or disable the CodeArt Google MP3 Audio Player plugin and replace it with an actively maintained alternative.
  • If removal is not immediately possible:
    • Block or restrict direct external access to direct_download.php at the web server or WAF layer.
    • Deploy a Web Application Firewall rule to detect and block path-traversal sequences (../) in requests to plugin endpoints.
    • Monitor web server logs for requests to direct_download.php containing traversal patterns, as exploitation has been observed in the wild.
    • Rotate database and other credentials if wp-config.php exposure is suspected.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
