CVE-2024-58388 – Unauthenticated Local File Inclusion / Path Traversal – Sharp and Toshiba Tec Multi

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2024-58388 is an unauthenticated local file inclusion (path traversal) vulnerability affecting the web management interface of Sharp Corporation and Toshiba Tec Corporation multifunction printers (MFPs). The flaw lets a remote, unauthenticated attacker read arbitrary files from the device’s filesystem, including system files and stored credentials. It carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 7.5 (High) and a CVSS v4.0 base score of 8.7 (High), and has reportedly been observed exploited in the wild.

Technical details

  • Root cause: the installed_emanual_down.html endpoint on the printer’s web interface accepts a path request parameter that is used to build a filesystem path without adequate sanitization.
  • Trigger: an attacker submits a request such as path=/manual/../../../<target-file>, using ../ directory traversal sequences to escape the intended manual directory and reference arbitrary files on the device.
  • Attack vector: network-based, no authentication or user interaction required — the endpoint is reachable from the printer’s exposed web management interface.
  • Impact: disclosure of sensitive files, including /etc/passwd, device configuration, and coredump files that may contain clear-text credentials and encryption keys. Leaked credentials can be chained with other flaws (e.g., device crash/DoS issues that generate coredumps) to escalate toward further compromise of the device or connected systems.

Affected software

  • Sharp Corporation: multiple multifunction printer (MFP) models running affected firmware versions of the embedded web interface.
  • Toshiba Tec Corporation: multiple multifunction printer (rebranded/OEM) models running affected firmware versions of the embedded web interface.
  • Sharp’s own 2024 advisory lists dozens of specific MX-series, BP-series, and DX-series models with fixed firmware available, as well as legacy models for which firmware support has ended.

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 7.5 (High) — CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:N
  • CVSS v4.0 Base Score: 8.7 (High) — CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: apply the firmware updates listed in Sharp’s security advisory for affected models; confirm with the vendor whether your specific model/firmware version is covered.
  • If no patch is available (legacy/end-of-support models): discontinue internet exposure of the device’s web management interface, restrict access via firewall to trusted management networks only, enable password protection on the device web page, and change any default administrator credentials.
  • General: never expose printer/MFP web management interfaces directly to the internet; place them behind network segmentation and VPN/firewall controls, and monitor for anomalous requests to manual/help-download endpoints.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
