Summary
CVE-2026-102424 is an unauthenticated path traversal (CWE-22) vulnerability in the Balbooa Forms extension for Joomla (com_baforms), affecting versions 1.0.0 through 2.4.3.3. The flaw allows an unauthenticated attacker to cause the component to email itself arbitrary, locally readable files — including Joomla’s configuration.php, which typically contains database credentials — by abusing a form’s auto-reply attachment feature. The issue carries a CVSS score of 8.9 (High).
Technical details
- Root cause: During public form submissions, the component accepts guest-controlled JSON describing upload-field state without validating it. For any object whose
idmerely looks numeric, the component trusts the supplied filename, concatenates it beneath the configured upload directory, and adds the result to the list of local attachment paths — without loading the referenced attachment record, verifying ownership/session/form/field, confirming the ID exists, canonicalizing the path, or enforcing directory containment. - Trigger conditions: The target form must have the "auto reply" and "attach uploaded files" options enabled.
- Attack vector: Network, no authentication or user interaction required. An attacker submits a form with a nonexistent numeric attachment ID and a traversal-style filename (e.g.
../../../../configuration.php) along with an attacker-controlled destination email address. - Impact: The component emails the resolved local file(s) as attachments to the submitted address, resulting in disclosure of arbitrary files readable by the Joomla web process — most notably
configuration.php, which typically exposes database credentials and other secrets.

Mitigation and recommended actions
- Immediate: Upgrade Balbooa Forms to version 2.4.3.4 or later, which introduces path sanitization and boundary checks in file-path resolution and email notification routines, replaces blind trust in client-supplied attachment metadata with server-side ownership verification, and adds broader JSON payload validation.
- If immediate patching is not possible: Disable the "auto reply" and/or "attach uploaded files" options on public-facing forms until the update can be applied, and review form submission and email logs for suspicious filenames containing traversal sequences (e.g.
../).
