Summary
CVE-2026-18556 is an authentication bypass vulnerability in N-able N-central, the remote monitoring and management (RMM) platform. An unauthenticated, network-based attacker can bypass authentication using an alternate path or channel to obtain administrative access remotely. It is rated HIGH severity (CVSS 4.0 base score 8.2) and has been actively exploited in the wild.
Technical details
- Root cause: Authentication bypass using an alternate path or channel (CWE-288), allowing authentication controls to be circumvented.
- Trigger conditions: Reachable N-central web console; no valid credentials required.
- Attack vector: Network (remote, unauthenticated).
- Impact: Attackers can obtain administrative ("god-mode") access to the N-central console. Because N-central manages downstream endpoints, a compromised server can be leveraged to run scripts, push tools, and open remote sessions across managed endpoints.
Affected software
- N-able N-central through version 2026.1 (both hosted and on-premises deployments).
Note: N-able subsequently determined the initial fix was incomplete; the follow-up issue is tracked separately as CVE-2026-18577, affecting versions through 2026.3.1.
Severity
- CVSS 4.0 base score: 8.2 (HIGH)
- Vector:
CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N
Mitigation and recommended actions
- Immediate: Upgrade N-central to the current hotfix build (2026.3.1.7) as recommended by N-able. Do not rely on 2026.3 alone, as it remained vulnerable to the incomplete-patch follow-up (CVE-2026-18577).
- If no patch can be applied immediately: Restrict network access to the N-central management console, enforce multi-factor authentication, audit user accounts and administrative access, and monitor for unusual activity. Given active exploitation, hunt for signs of unauthorized administrative access and unexpected remote-control activity.
