CVE-2026-46649 – Authentication Brute-Force / Account Takeover – Joplin Server ≤ 3.3.0

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-46649 is a critical improper authentication-throttling vulnerability (CWE-307) in Joplin Server’s SSO login-code verification endpoint. The endpoint accepts a 9-digit numeric code without any rate limiting, allowing an unauthenticated remote attacker to brute-force the code and hijack an active login session. The issue carries a CVSS v4.0 score of 9.1 (Critical).

Technical details

  • Root cause: the GET /api/login_with_code/:id endpoint (packages/server/src/routes/api/login.ts) validates a 9-digit numeric SSO login code (range 0–999999999) but does not apply the limiterLoginBruteForce rate limiter that protects other authentication endpoints.
  • The code has a 10-minute validity window, but the lack of throttling means all ~1 billion possible values can be attempted within that window.
  • Trigger conditions: a target user must have an active SSO login attempt in progress (i.e., a valid, unexpired login code exists) for the attacker to guess.
  • Attack vector: network, no authentication or user interaction required by the attacker; unlimited unauthenticated requests can be sent to the endpoint.
  • Impact: a correctly guessed code returns a full, valid session token, giving the attacker complete access to the victim’s notes, notebooks, and account settings — effectively a full account takeover.

Affected software

  • Joplin Server versions 3.3.0 and earlier (deployments with SSO login enabled)
  • Fixed in Joplin Server 3.7.2 and later

Severity

  • CVSS v4.0 Base Score: 9.1 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:P/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade Joplin Server to version 3.7.2 or later, where the SSO login-code endpoint is now subject to the limiterLoginBruteForce rate limiter.
  • If immediate patching is not possible: disable SSO login on Joplin Server until upgraded, and monitor/alert on high volumes of requests to the login_with_code endpoint as a compensating control.
  • After upgrading, review authentication logs for signs of prior brute-force attempts against SSO login codes.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
