Summary

CVE-2026-56191 is a critical Improper Authentication vulnerability (CWE-287) in Microsoft Exchange Online, carrying a maximum CVSS 3.1 base score of 10.0. The flaw allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to bypass authentication controls and perform tampering over the network, with the potential for complete compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability across a changed scope. Microsoft has confirmed the vulnerability and deployed a server-side fix to Exchange Online infrastructure.

  • Root cause: Improper authentication (CWE-287) in Microsoft Exchange Online; the service fails to adequately verify the identity of a requesting party before allowing network-facing operations to proceed.
  • Trigger conditions: Exploitable remotely over the network with no privileges and no user interaction required; attack complexity is low, making exploitation straightforward for a capable attacker.

  • Impact: Successful exploitation permits an unauthorized attacker to tamper with Exchange Online, resulting in complete loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability. The scope change (S:C) indicates that the impact extends beyond the vulnerable component itself. CISA’s SSVC assessment classifies this vulnerability as automatable with total technical impact.

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Patch status: Microsoft has released an official fix (temporal metric RL:O confirmed). As Exchange Online is a fully cloud-managed SaaS platform, Microsoft deploys security updates server-side automatically — no manual upgrade action is required for cloud-only tenants.
  • Audit for compromise: Organizations should review Exchange Online audit logs and Microsoft 365 Defender sign-in activity for evidence of unauthorized access, anomalous mail flow rule changes, or data tampering that may have occurred during the pre-patch exposure window.
  • Hybrid configurations: Organizations running hybrid Exchange deployments (Exchange Online combined with on-premises Exchange Server) should separately assess their on-premises infrastructure and hybrid connector configurations for any related exposure and apply all available on-premises security updates.
  • Monitor: Use the Exchange Admin Center and Microsoft 365 Defender to monitor for unexpected mailbox delegate assignments, forwarding rules, or authentication anomalies.
