CVE-2026-59163 – JWT Authentication Bypass (RCE-adjacent Data Tampering) – Mnemosyne < 3.10.1

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-59163 is a critical JWT signature verification bypass affecting the sync server component of Mnemosyne, an open-source AI memory system developed by AxDSan. Versions up to and including 3.10.0 fail to validate the cryptographic signature of bearer tokens presented to the sync API, allowing any well-formed JWT — including unsigned tokens using alg: none — to be accepted as valid. This flaw carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.1 (Critical) and permits unauthenticated attackers with network access to forge authentication tokens and impersonate any user.

Technical details

  • Root cause: The authentication logic in mnemosyne/core/sync_server.py decoded the JWT header and payload using base64 decoding but invoked the JWT library with options that effectively disabled signature verification, so the cryptographic signature was never checked against the server’s secret.
  • Trigger conditions: Any client capable of reaching the Mnemosyne sync server over the network can submit a crafted JWT (with an arbitrary payload, an incorrect signature, or alg: none) and have it accepted as a legitimate, authenticated request.
  • Attack vector: Network (AV:N), low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction — the attacker only needs network access to the sync endpoints.
  • Impact: Successful exploitation allows an attacker to forge tokens for arbitrary users and impersonate them against the /sync/status, /sync/push, and /sync/pull endpoints, enabling unauthorized reading and modification of synced data and corruption of victims’ local databases (high confidentiality and integrity impact; no direct availability impact).

Affected software

  • AxDSan Mnemosyne versions up to and including 3.10.0
  • Fixed in version 3.10.1 (fix commit a0b6b871)

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 9.1 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:N

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade Mnemosyne to version 3.10.1 or later, which implements full HMAC-SHA256 signature verification, explicit algorithm allow-listing (rejecting alg: none), timezone-aware expiration checks, and constant-time signature comparison.
  • If immediate patching is not possible:
    • Restrict network access to the Mnemosyne sync server using firewall rules so only trusted hosts can reach it.
    • Place the sync server behind a reverse proxy enforcing mutual TLS (mTLS) authentication.
    • Bind the sync server to localhost only and require an SSH tunnel for remote access until the upgrade can be applied.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
