CVE-2026-77762 – HTTP/2 Trailer Injection (Race Condition) – Apache Tomcat 8.5.59–8.5.100, 9.0.39–9.

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-77762 is a race condition (CWE-362) in Apache Tomcat’s HTTP/2 implementation in which a stale HPACK emitter can inject trailer fields into a different, recycled pooled Request object. Under concurrent HTTP/2 traffic, this improper synchronization can cause trailer header data from one request to be attributed to another request being processed on the same connection pool. The issue is rated High severity (CVSS 8.1) and affects Apache Tomcat 8.5.x, 9.0.x, 10.1.x, and 11.0.x.

Technical details

  • Root cause: Tomcat’s HTTP/2 HPACK trailer emitter does not properly synchronize access to pooled/recycled Request objects, allowing a "stale" emitter instance to write trailer header fields into a Request object that has since been reused for a different, unrelated HTTP/2 request.
  • Trigger conditions: Occurs under concurrent execution — multiple HTTP/2 streams/requests processed against the same connection where Tomcat recycles Request objects from a pool, with timing that allows a stale emitter to still be active.
  • Attack vector: Network-accessible; attack complexity is High (the race condition must be reliably triggered), no privileges or user interaction are required.
  • Impact: Successful exploitation can result in trailer field data being misattributed to another client’s request, with the CVSS vector indicating potential impact to confidentiality, integrity, and availability.

Affected software

  • Apache Tomcat 11.0.0-M1 through 11.0.25
  • Apache Tomcat 10.1.0-M1 through 10.1.59
  • Apache Tomcat 9.0.39 through 9.0.121
  • Apache Tomcat 8.5.59 through 8.5.100 (end-of-life at time of disclosure, confirmed affected)

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 8.1 (High)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:H/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade to Apache Tomcat 11.0.26, 10.1.60, or 9.0.122, which contain the fix for this issue.
  • If no patch can be applied immediately: Apache Tomcat 8.5.x is end-of-life and does not have an official fixed release; organizations still running 8.5.59–8.5.100 should prioritize migration to a supported, patched branch (9.0.122, 10.1.60, or 11.0.26). Where upgrading is not immediately possible, restrict or monitor HTTP/2 usage on exposed Tomcat instances and ensure network-layer controls limit exposure until patched.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
