CVE-2026-82042 – Authentication Bypass / Full Administrative API Access – UTMStack before 11.2.16

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-82042 is a critical authentication bypass vulnerability in UTMStack, an open-source SIEM/unified threat management platform. The flaw resides in the InternalApiKeyFilter component, which accepts any request carrying a valid Utm-Internal-Key header matching the server’s INTERNAL_KEY environment variable as fully authenticated, granting the requester administrative API access without a user account or JWT. It affects all UTMStack versions prior to 11.2.16 and carries a CVSS score of 9.3 (also reported as 9.8 under CVSS v3.1).

Technical details

  • Root cause: InternalApiKeyFilter validates requests solely by comparing the Utm-Internal-Key HTTP header against the INTERNAL_KEY environment variable, with no path restriction limiting which endpoints accept this header, no role or context check tying the key to a specific internal caller, and no rate limiting or audit logging around key validation attempts.
  • Trigger conditions: An attacker who obtains the value of INTERNAL_KEY (e.g., through source code exposure, leaked configuration files, or memory/process disclosure) can send it in the Utm-Internal-Key header on any API request.
  • Attack vector: Network-based; no authentication, user interaction, or special privileges are required beyond knowledge of the internal key value.
  • Impact: Full administrative API access — creation and management of user accounts, exfiltration of sensitive data, and modification of security configurations (e.g., intrusion prevention settings, firewall rules, traffic routing), enabling further lateral movement within the protected network.

Affected software

  • UTMStack versions prior to 11.2.16 (all versions from the product’s initial release up to 11.2.16).

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1: 9.8 (Critical) — CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H
  • CVSS v4.0: 9.3 (Critical)

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade UTMStack to version 11.2.16 or later, which fixes the InternalApiKeyFilter authentication logic.
  • Additional precaution: Rotate the INTERNAL_KEY environment variable value after upgrading, in case the prior key value was exposed.
  • If immediate patching is not possible: Restrict network access to the UTMStack management API to trusted internal networks only, and audit for any configuration or source exposure that could leak the INTERNAL_KEY value.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
