Summary
CVE-2026-82824 is a critical path traversal vulnerability in Hitachi Coding Software Suite (HCSS), a client/server application used to manage industrial coding and marking devices such as inkjet printers and vision systems. The flaw allows a remote, unauthenticated attacker to access, create, modify, or delete arbitrary files on the host system by supplying crafted directory traversal sequences. The issue carries a CRITICAL severity rating and affects all HCSS versions through 3.3.0.
Technical details
- Root cause: Improper input validation (CWE-35, path traversal using
.../...//style sequences) in how HCSS processes file path parameters supplied to the application. - Trigger conditions: An attacker sends a specially crafted request containing directory traversal sequences to a reachable HCSS instance; no authentication or user interaction is required to trigger the flaw.
- Attack vector: Network-based (AV:N), low attack complexity, no privileges required, no user interaction — making the vulnerability remotely exploitable without any prerequisites.
- Impact: Successful exploitation allows an attacker to read, write, create, or delete files outside the application’s intended directory scope, which can lead to disclosure of sensitive data, tampering with application or system files, and potential further compromise of the host (confidentiality, integrity, and availability are all impacted at the "High" level).
Affected software
- Hitachi Coding Software Suite: all versions through 3.3.0 (inclusive).
- Fixed in: Hitachi Coding Software Suite 4.0.0 and later.

Mitigation and recommended actions
- Immediate: Upgrade Hitachi Coding Software Suite to version 4.0.0 or later, which contains the fix for this path traversal flaw.
- If immediate patching is not possible:
- Restrict network access to HCSS servers so they are reachable only from trusted, segmented management networks — do not expose HCSS interfaces directly to the internet.
- Apply firewall or network ACL rules limiting inbound access to the HCSS application to authorized administrative hosts only.
- Monitor HCSS-related file system directories and application logs for unexpected file creation, modification, or deletion, and for requests containing directory traversal sequences (e.g.,
../). - Follow the vendor’s published public statement for any additional configuration guidance until the upgrade can be completed.
