CVE-2026-89212 – XXE Information Disclosure – Perforce Akana API Platform (all versions before 2024.

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-89212 is an XML External Entity (XXE) vulnerability in the Perforce Akana API Platform, caused by improper restriction of external entity references during XML-to-JSON processing. The flaw is remotely exploitable over the network without authentication or user interaction, and carries a CVSS v4.0 base score of 9.2 (Critical). Successful exploitation can expose sensitive internal data via crafted XML input processed by the platform.

Technical details

  • Root cause: Akana API Platform’s XML-to-JSON conversion routine does not properly restrict external entity references, classified as CWE-611 (Improper Restriction of XML External Entity Reference).
  • Trigger condition: An attacker submits crafted XML content to an Akana component that performs XML-to-JSON transformation, causing the underlying XML parser to resolve external entities.
  • Attack vector: Network-based, requires no authentication and no user interaction (per the published CVSS metrics).
  • Impact: The vulnerability primarily affects confidentiality — it can be leveraged to disclose sensitive local files or internal resources reachable by the server (data exfiltration via XXE), with the CVSS v4.0 vector indicating high impact to confidentiality of the vulnerable system and low/high impact to a subsequent system.

Affected software

  • Perforce Akana API Platform, all versions prior to 2024.1
  • Perforce Akana API Platform 2024.1.0 through 2024.1.5
  • Perforce Akana API Platform 2025.1.0 through 2025.1.1
  • Perforce Akana API Platform 2026.1

Fixed in: 2024.1.6, 2025.1.2, and 2026.2.

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 8.6 (High) — CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:N/A:N
  • CVSS v4.0 Base Score: 9.2 (Critical) — CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:L/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:N/VA:N/SC:H/SI:L/SA:N

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade Akana API Platform to version 2024.1.6, 2025.1.2, or 2026.2 (or later), depending on your current release track.
  • If immediate patching is not possible: Restrict network access to Akana API Platform management and processing endpoints to trusted networks only, and monitor/inspect inbound XML payloads for external entity or DOCTYPE declarations at a WAF or API gateway layer as an interim compensating control until the patch can be applied.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
