CVE-2026-92161 – Unauthenticated Account Takeover – FriendsOfFlarum OAuth Extension (Discord Provide

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-92161 is a critical (CVSS 9.8) unauthenticated account takeover vulnerability in the FriendsOfFlarum oauth extension for the Flarum forum platform, caused by insufficient verification of data authenticity (CWE-345) in its Discord OAuth provider. When Discord login is enabled, an attacker can hijack any Flarum account — including administrator accounts — simply by knowing the victim’s email address, without needing the victim’s password or any interaction from them.

Technical details

  • Root cause: the Discord OAuth provider in fof/oauth passed the email address returned by Discord to Flarum core via provideTrustedEmail() without checking Discord’s verified flag on that email.
  • Discord allows an account to hold an unverified email address as long as the account’s phone number has been verified, so an attacker can register a Discord account using a victim’s known email without ever proving ownership of it.
  • Attack flow: the attacker (1) registers/uses a Discord account with the victim’s email and a verified phone number, (2) initiates "Sign in with Discord" on the target Flarum instance, and (3) Flarum core, trusting the unverified email as authenticated, matches it to the victim’s existing Flarum account and logs the attacker in as that user.
  • Attack vector is network-based, requires no privileges and no user interaction (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N), and works only if the Discord OAuth provider is enabled on the vulnerable Flarum forum.
  • Impact: full compromise of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected forum account, since the attack bypasses local passwords and any account-level MFA by operating directly at the authentication/identity-linking layer; administrator account takeover leads to full forum compromise.

Affected software

  • fof/oauth (FriendsOfFlarum OAuth extension for Flarum) versions 1.7.3 and earlier
  • fof/oauth versions 2.0.0-beta.1 through 2.0.0-beta.3
  • Only installations with the Discord OAuth provider enabled are exploitable.

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 9.8 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: upgrade fof/oauth to 1.7.4 (for 1.x installs) or 2.0.0-beta.4 (for 2.0 beta installs), both of which validate the Discord email verification flag before trusting the address.
  • If unable to patch immediately: disable the Discord OAuth provider in the extension’s settings until the upgrade can be applied.
  • After upgrading, review recent account logins/linked Discord identities for signs of unauthorized access, particularly on administrator accounts.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
