CVE-2026-94089 – Unauthenticated Remote Code Execution – D-Link DIR-868L 2.01b05

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-94089 is a critical stack-based buffer overflow (CWE-121/CWE-119) in the Authentication Handler component of D-Link DIR-868L routers running firmware 2.01b05. The flaw resides in the strcpy call in /webfa_authentication.cgi, which copies attacker-controlled id and password request parameters into a fixed-size stack buffer without length validation. The vulnerability is remotely exploitable without authentication and has a maximum CVSS v3.1 base score of 10.0; a public proof-of-concept exploit exists.

Technical details

  • Root cause: webfa_authentication.cgi passes the unsanitized id (and password) URL parameters directly to strcpy, which does not bound the copy to the destination stack buffer’s size.
  • Trigger conditions: A single unauthenticated HTTP GET/POST request to /webfa_authentication.cgi with an oversized id parameter (public PoC uses a 1864-byte value) overflows the stack buffer and overwrites the saved return address.
  • Attack vector: Network-based, no authentication or user interaction required (AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N).
  • Impact: Overwriting the return address gives an attacker control of program execution flow in the CGI process, enabling denial of service (crash of the authentication handler) and potentially arbitrary code execution on the device with the privileges of the web server process.

Affected software

  • D-Link DIR-868L, firmware version 2.01b05

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 10.0 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:C/C:H/I:H/A:H

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: No official D-Link patch or security advisory addressing this CVE has been published at the time of this writing. Check D-Link’s support portal for the DIR-868L for an updated firmware release before relying on any workaround.
  • If no patch: Remove the device’s web administration/authentication interface from direct internet exposure; restrict access to /webfa_authentication.cgi to trusted internal networks only via firewall rules or VPN. Disable remote management on the router. Given D-Link’s history of end-of-life status for legacy router models, evaluate replacing the DIR-868L with a currently supported device if no vendor fix becomes available.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
