CVE-2026-41869 – Unauthenticated Denial of Service (Forced Shutdown) – Apache Nutch 1.10 through 1.2

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-41869 is a missing authorization and improper resource shutdown vulnerability in the Apache Nutch Server REST API that allows an unauthenticated remote attacker to forcibly shut down a running Nutch Server instance and interrupt in-progress crawl/index jobs. The flaw affects Apache Nutch versions 1.10 through 1.22 and carries a CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.1 (Critical), reflecting network exploitability with no authentication or user interaction required.

Technical details

  • Root cause: The Nutch Server’s REST API does not enforce authorization checks on administrative operations, combined with improper handling of resource shutdown (CWE-862: Missing Authorization, CWE-404: Improper Resource Shutdown or Release).
  • Trigger conditions: An attacker only needs network access to the exposed Nutch REST API endpoint(s); no credentials or prior session are required.
  • Attack vector: Network-based (AV:N) — the attacker sends unauthenticated requests directly to the Nutch Server’s REST API to trigger shutdown or job-interruption operations.
  • Impact: Successful exploitation forcibly stops the Nutch Server process and interrupts active crawling/indexing jobs, resulting in a high-availability impact (denial of service). Apache’s own advisory rates the issue as "Moderate" severity, while its calculated CVSS v3.1 score is 9.1 (Critical) due to the unauthenticated, network-reachable nature of the flaw.
  • This issue was disclosed alongside two related, more severe Nutch Server REST API vulnerabilities (CVE-2026-41870, an unauthenticated RCE via JEXL injection, and CVE-2026-41871, unauthenticated reflection-based job execution), indicating the Nutch Server REST API as a whole was affected by systemic authorization gaps.

Affected software

  • Apache Nutch versions 1.10 through 1.22 (inclusive) — specifically the Nutch Server (Nutch REST API) component.

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 9.1 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:N/A:H

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade to Apache Nutch 1.23, which removes the Nutch Server component entirely, eliminating the vulnerable REST API.
  • If upgrading is not immediately possible:
    • Restrict network access to the Nutch Service/REST API to trusted users and hosts only (e.g., via firewall rules, network segmentation, or VPN-only access).
    • Do not expose the Nutch Server REST API directly to the internet.
    • Monitor for unexpected Nutch Server shutdowns or interrupted crawl jobs as a potential indicator of exploitation attempts.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
