CVE-2026-86248 – Authentication Bypass (CLIENT_CERT/OCSP) – Apache Tomcat 9.0.92–9.0.121, 10.1.22–10

Summary

CVE-2026-86248 is an authentication bypass vulnerability (CWE-287: Improper Authentication) affecting Apache Tomcat. It stems from an incomplete fix for a prior issue, CVE-2026-34500, in which CLIENT_CERT authentication does not fail as expected in certain scenarios even when OCSP soft-fail checking is explicitly disabled. The issue is tracked with a CVSS v3.1 base score of 9.8 (Critical), reflecting the potential for authentication to succeed when it should be denied.

Technical details

  • Root cause: Tomcat’s certificate-based (CLIENT_CERT) authentication performs OCSP revocation checks against client certificates. A prior fix for CVE-2026-34500 addressed cases where OCSP checks would "soft-fail" (silently allow authentication) under the Foreign Function & Memory (FFM) API path even when administrators had disabled soft-fail. That fix was incomplete — additional scenarios still allow authentication to proceed without a valid OCSP result.
  • Trigger conditions: Deployments that use TLS client certificate authentication (CLIENT_CERT) with OCSP revocation checking configured and soft-fail explicitly disabled are affected. The flaw manifests when the OCSP check does not produce a definitive result but authentication is still permitted.
  • Attack vector: Network (remote, no authentication or user interaction required to attempt exploitation) — an attacker presenting an invalid, revoked, or otherwise non-validating client certificate may still be authenticated.
  • Impact: Successful exploitation undermines the integrity of certificate-based authentication, potentially allowing an attacker to bypass CLIENT_CERT authentication controls and gain unauthorized access to protected resources, resulting in loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of the affected application.

Affected software

  • Apache Tomcat 11.0.0-M14 through 11.0.25
  • Apache Tomcat 10.1.22 through 10.1.59
  • Apache Tomcat 9.0.92 through 9.0.121

Severity

  • CVSS v3.1 Base Score: 9.8 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:3.1/AV:N/AC:L/PR:N/UI:N/S:U/C:H/I:H/A:H

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade to a fixed Apache Tomcat release:
    • Tomcat 11.x → upgrade to 11.0.26
    • Tomcat 10.1.x → upgrade to 10.1.60
    • Tomcat 9.0.x → upgrade to 9.0.122
  • If unable to patch immediately: Review and restrict reliance on CLIENT_CERT authentication with OCSP revocation checking until upgraded; ensure OCSP responder availability and monitor authentication logs for anomalous client-certificate authentication events. Removing the bundled Tomcat examples web application is also recommended as general hardening, though it does not address the underlying authentication logic flaw.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
