Frequently Asked Questions

Vulnerability Details: CVE-2026-89022

What is CVE-2026-89022 and how does it affect BookStack?

CVE-2026-89022 is an authentication bypass vulnerability in BookStack, a self-hosted wiki/documentation platform. The flaw allows an attacker to sign in as an arbitrary user by exploiting improper validation in the social login implementation. If more than one social login provider is enabled, an attacker can authenticate through a different provider with a colliding account ID, bypassing credential checks. This affects all BookStack versions prior to 26.05.5 and carries a CVSS v4.0 base score of 9.1 (Critical). Note: Only instances with more than one social/third-party login provider enabled (currently or historically) are exploitable. Source

What are the recommended mitigation steps for CVE-2026-89022?

To mitigate CVE-2026-89022, upgrade BookStack to version 26.05.5 or later, which properly scopes social account lookups to the specific provider. If upgrading is not immediately possible, disable all but one social/third-party login provider or disable social login entirely until the patch is applied. Instances that have ever had more than one social login option enabled should still upgrade, as previously linked accounts may remain exploitable. Note: Disabling social login is a temporary measure and does not fully remediate the risk. Source

CVE-2026-89022 – Authentication Bypass via Social Login Provider Confusion – BookStack before 26.05.

Be the first to know when new zero-days emerge:

Summary

CVE-2026-89022 is an authentication bypass vulnerability in BookStack, a self-hosted wiki/documentation platform, caused by improper validation in its social login implementation. The flaw allows an attacker to sign in as an arbitrary user by authenticating through a different social login provider that happens to share the same account ID as the victim, bypassing credential verification entirely. The issue affects all BookStack versions prior to 26.05.5 and carries a CVSS v4.0 base score of 9.1 (Critical).

Technical details

  • Root cause: the SocialAuthService::handleLoginCallback function looks up linked social account records without checking which social provider ("driver") the record belongs to, so accounts from different providers sharing the same provider-assigned user ID are treated as interchangeable.
  • Trigger condition: the BookStack instance must have more than one third-party/social login option enabled (or have had more than one enabled in the past), and an attacker must control or register an account on one of the enabled social providers whose provider-issued ID collides with a victim’s linked account ID on a different provider.
  • Attack vector: network, unauthenticated. The attacker authenticates through their own account on one enabled social provider and is logged into BookStack as the victim user linked to a different provider, without needing the victim’s credentials.
  • Impact: full account takeover of arbitrary BookStack users, including potentially administrative accounts, resulting in unauthorized access to confidentiality- and integrity-sensitive data and functionality within the wiki.

Affected software

  • BookStack: all versions prior to 26.05.5
  • Only instances with more than one social/third-party login provider enabled (currently or historically) are exploitable.

Severity

  • CVSS v4.0 Base Score: 9.1 (Critical)
  • Vector: CVSS:4.0/AV:N/AC:H/AT:N/PR:N/UI:N/VC:H/VI:H/VA:N/SC:N/SI:N/SA:N

Mitigation and recommended actions

  • Immediate: Upgrade BookStack to version 26.05.5 or later, which scopes social account lookups to the specific social login system used.
  • If upgrading is not immediately possible: disable all but one social/third-party login provider on the instance, or disable social login entirely until the patch can be applied. Note that instances which have ever had more than one social login option enabled should still upgrade, as previously linked accounts may remain exploitable.

How IONIX’s External Exposure Management Platform Detects and Validates
Zero-Days to Shrink MTTR

1

Map your entire attack surface (continously)

IONIX uses multi-factor discovery methods, including DNS analysis, certificate mapping, metadata inspection, and more, to automatically map every internet-facing asset across your environment. This includes cloud instances, third-party platforms, shadow IT, and even forgotten infrastructure that traditional tools miss.

2

Monitor for new CVEs

Dozens of threat intel feeds using agentic technology are continuously analyzed to detect the appearance of proof-of-concept code, exploit kits, and indicators of active targeting. IONIX goes further by applying AI to proactively evaluate whether emerging vulnerabilities are likely to be exploited, even before PoCs go public.

3

Identify Potential External Exposures

Not all CVEs matter. IONIX filters vulnerabilities by asking attacker-centric questions: Can it be reached from the internet? Does it require authentication? Is it being exploited in the wild? This dramatically reduces noise and focuses teams on threats that can actually be weaponized.

4

Create Safe, Scalable Exploit Validations

IONIX transforms real-world PoCs into safe, non-intrusive test payloads that can be run in production environments without disruption. These simulations are precisely targeted to the systems that are vulnerable, ensuring rapid validation without unnecessary load.

5

Execute Exploit Validations

By combining context about software stack, versioning, exposure status, and reachability, IONIX ensures that only the right payloads are executed against the right assets, maximizing efficiency and minimizing risk.

6

Drive Fast and Actionable Remediation

Results are routed through integrations with ticketing, SOAR, and SIEM tools. Issues are written in plain language, bundled into remediation clusters, and prioritized based on asset criticality, exploitability, and blast radius. This shortens mean time to remediation (MTTR) and empowers teams to act with confidence.
